The ferry is free of charge.

Big Tancook Island is serviced by the William G. Ernst ferry, which is operated by the Nova Scotia Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal.

The ferry takes passengers and cargo only. A vehicle can be transported only through special pre-booking, which is determined by the tides. A vehicle cannot go on and off the island on the same day.

Bikes are considered cargo and are welcome aboard the ferry. Check with a crew member wharf side for instructions on loading.

Dogs are permitted on the ferry. They must be in a carrier to join you in the passenger cabin, unless they are a registered service animal.

Dogs are welcome on walking tours. Check ahead if you wish to bring your dog on a driving tour.

There are two food service options on the island:

  • Patrick's Island Bistro (Now open on weekends for the summer 2025 season)
  • The Toast Cafe (opening June 2025 at the Recreation Centre)

Additionally, cold drinks and snacks will be available at South Cove Small Goods (opening July 2025).

There are a few shops on the island:

  • Wishing Stones Studio & Gallery
  • Julie's Hobby Craft & Resin Studio (Open by Chance)
  • Tancook Tourism Centre (opening June 2025)
  • South Cove Small Goods (opening July 2025)
  • Gravel Cove Studio (opening summer 2025)

Visitors can access indoor public washrooms on the ferry, and at the Recreation Centre (opening June 2025).

The Big Tancook Island Emergency Response Association provides defensive fire and medical first response in our community. In the event of an emergency, dial 911 and help will be dispatched to your location.

In the event of a medical emergency, patients are transported by either ferry or LifeFlight.

Visitors are encouraged to wear comfortable shoes for walking, and dress in layers. Weather and temperatures can shift quickly. And don't forget your water and snacks!

There is cell coverage over most of the island, but you will find there are some areas of limited service.

Complimentary one-hour Wi-Fi service is provided by TNC from the Recreation Centre. To access, choose this network via settings and follow the prompts on your web browser to connect.
