A Tancook Island experience is about more than sailing to our shores and travelling our roads. Its about hearing our stories, meeting our people, and learning about our unique way of life. South Cove Experiences was born out of a desire to share all this with you. 

ORIGIN STORY

Meet the family behind the business - Katherine, Ricky and Lucas. 

Katherine is a come-from-away who turned up on the island for a visit in 2008, meeting Ricky by chance along the dusty roads and, after many adventures together, falling in love.

They were married on Tancook Island in 2012, and welcomed their son Lucas in 2015. They  moved to the island full-time in 2020, just in time for Lucas to start school at the one-room school house, and for Ricky to join the generations-old family lobster fishing business. 

After several years of hybrid work between home and Halifax, Katherine is now leveraging her 17-year career in event management to pursue this entrepreneurial dream full-time. 

EXPERIENCE

Katherine is a skilled story-teller and guide. She is known for her enthusiasm, sense of humour, and easy going nature. Her knowledge of the island, and her love for this special place shines through to all who meet her. 

She is Chair of the Big Tancook Island Elementary School Advisory Council, a certified Medical First Responder for the Big Tancook Island Emergency Response Association, and a Tancook Island Recreation Centre Association volunteer. Each year she coordinates a community Earth Day and Shoreline Cleanup, and works to as an advocate for the island and community.

ISLAND LIFE

The Cross Family enjoy life by the sea in their 200+ year old home, with their two rescue pups from the Bahamas, and their five runner ducks. Their island life is rich with the love  of their extended island family, beloved friends and neighbours. They live a semi-homesteading life, keeping gardens, cutting wood from their land and being outdoors as much as humanly possible.
